New date for TJCO DSA Auditions 2011 opened!!

Applicants who have submitted their forms but could not make it on the previous dates please take note!!

Day 3 Auditions will be held on 16 May 2011(Thurs) from 9am to 1pm.

Similar to previous days, applicants are to prepare a solo piece of about 5 mins. And will be interviewed by the EXCO, teachers and conductor.

Also, bring along

1. Copies of school results slips

2. Copies of musical certificates

3. Own instruments.

4. DSA application form which can be downloaded here. (Visit link for more information on DSA)

5. and other relevant documents as stated in the TJC website DSA link

Little Post about Little Beings

Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly.

Okay, correction: aerodynamically bumblebees were not supposed to be able to fly back in the past, at least when the biologists capitalised on the fact that the bumblebees’ wings were simply too short to produce a lift force enough to keep their already miniscule bodies in the air to deride the physicists and proclaim the beauty of biology. Of course after decades of being mocked and ridiculed by their bitter rivals, the physicists bit back like some dogs gone rabid and found out that the bumblebees do not actually fly like planes; they hover like helicopters. Their wings vibrate so fast that they generate tiny air vortices to keep themselves in air, on air, mid air or whatever the correct way to express this is.

Okay, to hell with the story and the Physics, the main focus of this little post about little beings is about the fascination generated by the biologists’ claims. Well, before the physicists managed to find a convincing explanation, the bumblebee became the miracle bee that defied the laws of gravity; the same bee that slapped Sir Isaac Newton across his face; the same bee that stung him and caused all the mounds and craters on his face; the same bee that made him appear to have amazingly ugly hair in our textbooks; the same bee that brought us this nice little quote.

Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that so it goes on flying anyway.

Well, at least it was true for a few decades. The bumblebees did it, so can we.

TJCO will be having DSA auditions real soon! so those interested to join our family must start preparing okay!

the dates are:
1st june 2010 (tues), 10.30-12.30 pm and 1.30-3.30pm
2nd june 2010 (wed) 1-5 pm

VENUE: CO room!
Applicants should come prepared for the following:

Prepare at least one piece not more than 10mins.

Bring you own instruments (except for yangqin, double bass and sheng). Percussionists and yanqin players, remember to bring your own drumsticks and bamboo sticks:D

Bring a photocopy of your O level results and any form of documentation of the musical achievements or leadership achievements.

Also, bring your JAE registration slip cause we cannot accept DSA students accepted by other JCs.

here is a little update on practice dates and timings for the coming week.

Monday: 3.30 to 8

Tuesday: 4.30 t0 8

Wednesday: 3.30 to 8

Thursday: no practice

Friday: 3 to 8

Saturday : to be confirmed

SYF Closing Ceremony rehearsal: 27th July

as you guys can tell, we are actually running a really tight schedule!

since the school didn't allow practices due to H1N1, we only have one week left for us to get back into shape for the SYF closing ceremony.

Moreover, most of us have not touched our instruments for almost 2 months!!

(didnt feel that long with the JCts and all huh..)

So now with the JCTs behind us (phew..), its time to start practice. Its gonna be a little intensive..but its gonna be worth it!

Joining us on the stage to perform with us will be our dear Alumni members and DSA applicants.

This performance is gonna be BIGGER and BETTER!!

HI ALL!!!

Haha 09/10 comm had our first CO prac as the new comm in charge today(: Overall, practice went pretty well despite the low attendance (because j2s have to study). Everyone, including our shortlisted DSA was very focused~ Everyone managed to catch 喜讯 quickly, even though we only had a brief encounter with that song for concert. However, i think we have mostly lost touch with 第二, so gotta buck up! Best if we can all "revise" the scores during study breaks/free times and recap all the notes that we wrote on our scores for SYF, up to every little detail. Find back that rockin' feeling, let's rock the stage tgt on 30th July! :D

Reminder: There's practice again next Tuesday 8.30am-1pm, compulsory for j1s. DSA and J2s, pls try to make it if possible. See y'all there(:

大家好，比赛刚结束，我想此刻大家心情肯定也很激动，我也和你们一样开心，毕竟同学们为了这个比赛是付出了好多心血，总算我们的努力是有了成果，荣誉金牌是对大家努力的一个肯定，但我想同学们更大的收获应该是通过这次比赛所学习到的“团对精神”，一个乐团的成功是由每一个团员开始，一首乐曲的成功是由每一个音符开始，很高兴看到同学们在这段时间所展现的刻苦精神，当我在台上指挥你们时，你们展现出来的自信与热情的确感动了我，我时常告诉大家，乐器只是一个工具，不管你演奏什么音乐，更重要的是你的心要有音乐，第二民族就是一个很好的例子，jazz 的部份大家都演得很好，我们接下来还有音乐会，让我们一起努力再次把最有特色的 “淡初精神”呈现给观众，谢谢大家

Dearest TJCO,

Its just one or two days before the 66 of you step up on stage, representing TJCO in SYF 2009.

Two years ago, we were just like you guys, staying back in school almost every single day, till we hear the "gate closing" bell, and we'll never leave till the school is all quiet and the sky is all dark. We didnt have time to finish our tutorials, only slept so few hours a day, and ended up dozing off uncontrollably during lectures.

10May2007 was one of the most terrifying day of my entire life.. I never felt so much like dying during a performance before. Err no, it wasnt even a performance, it was a COMPETITION. The whole world knows that I screwed up the start of the set piece and dragged the whole orchestra into a total disaster for the first few bars of the song. I was totally stunned and was thinking, "&%$E#^!&!# Is this even TJCO?" I had this stupid idea to stand up halfway through the song and say "STOP! Can we start again, please?" (HAHAHAHAHA, luckily I didnt!).

While waiting for results, many of us were already feeling very discouraged, and somehow we were quite sure that GWH has sort of flown away (because of me D: ). When the person was announcing the results, it seemed like she's saying it in super slow motioned- slow motion. "G..o...l...d..................................wit....&*%$#!@)(*@*!", just like how Harry mentioned it was like. OH MY TIANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN. We REALLY got GWH! And so many of us were screaming, crying, jumping around like nobody's business.

Im sure that no one, in this entire world, will be able to fully express how it really feels like hear "Gold with Honours" for your school. But now when I think back, I still can imagine the excitement, the joy so vividly, that no words can put across. We know, and we know that all the months of tiring practices didnt go to waste. We walked out of SCH, feeling proud that we were wearing the green blazer, with the TJC logo on it.

Dearest juniors, two years ago, when we almost lost hope and thought we couldnt make it anymore, there came a miracle, and we achieved what we really really wanted. I dont know how you confident you all are about wednesday, but just want to let you all know that, if there could be a miracle 2 years ago, it can definitely happen, on 6 May 2009, as long as all of you give in your best. We didnt win the Gold with Honours once, so that we can have the fame and glory for the next 2 years, but we want to keep name of TJCO high and above, as always, and pass this on batch after batch, year after year.

Hundreds of CO alumni might have graduated from TJC, but then again, we were in the orchestra for a similar purpose. We may not have been in the same batch together, but still, we're always ONE TJCO.

Because you belong to TJCO, because youre wearing the green blazer and uniform with TJC logo and TJCO badge, you deserve to walk up the stage with confidence on the 6th of May. No matter what the outcome is, you guys can be sure that all the seniors will be there to support you all and to tell you guys that you people have made all of us proud of you.

Just do your best. And may you guys walk out of Singapore Conference Hall on Wednesday, cheering, shouting, crying, happily taking photos, and most importantly,

proud to say that you are from TJCO.

To my dear juniors in TJCO:

It's only 3 days to SYF. Why am i reminding u all...haha...i reckon all (or MOST) of u must be so nervous. I remember how i was like the day before syf '07...after the practice, i told everyone that if tjco gets gwh, i'm so gonna cry...those were the good old days indeed...but after the results were announced, i didn't shed a single drop of tear...sigh...now when i recall the tough and discouraging times we had then...really cried. it meant so little to some of us.

"wahse, how u all get gwh de?!"
"dunno leh. just anyhow hantam one choice piece. go for a few practices. then play on stage and get lor. it's nothing lah, really."

the truth is always so unbearable. the coldness and the cruelty. so much to be said, so little is spoken. after we played the 2 pieces on stage, i walked towards the exit, following everyone else. in my mind, there was nothing but "nevermind nevermind." that was how i tried to encourage myself. why nevermind? because if we get gold, also nevermind; at least standard didn't drop. that was wat we kept thinking.

"sigh sigh sigh. why like that?"
"like wat?!"
"like that lor. sigh."

how curious it is. we are humans. we want perfection. especially so much time and effort is being put into something. u know wat? i see the gwh, i can feel it. it's only this tiny little bit of some undefineable 'thing' that separates the gold from the gwh. I often wonder that it is. luck, some ppl say. I was seated down beside junhong in the horribly tensed concert hall. everyone was talking and running around. gossips and predictments. how little they meant. at least to me. wat others think of us.

"that's all? how abt rj, vj and nj? I heard they are not bad also..."

silence. how ironic. it was SO noisy. my head could have just exploded. why can't they just announce the results immediately after we performed. save us from all this waiting shit and agony. then again, history repeats itself so often (with the help of technology) - Temasek Junior College, Gold with Honours. I am very proud to say...to say something stupid. I, harry pan, was the first to react to that statement. meaning to say, at the 'with' i already rose to my feet, hands in the air (very much like a disturbed chimp) and yelling "YE..." the rest was drowned by my fellow mates that were spread all over, resulting in an excellent stereo effect.

earlier in the day. morning. i was so tired. couldn't sleep lah!! what else. dun tell me u won't, because u WILL. hahahaha~~ our dear conductor was nowhere to be found. late!! ("erm can give us a bit more time? our conductor still on his way here...") 5th school on stage. can imagine how early we had to be there. now is 3rd. good luck man. when he came...i expected it. we merely played a few important exerpts...then suddenly, i was staring at the screen...tpjc...but i couldn't hear anything much. i sighed again, dunno for wat.

"is my qin tuned?"
"is my hair messy?"
"aiyo, now still care abt your hair?!!"
"just tell me!!"
"no lah! very nice lah, okay?"
"shit! it SHOULD be messy!!"

several MAJOR mistakes were made by me. i followed the cellos!! must be bixia and grace...lured me into following their footsteps when i ought to have made a left turn and followed the huqins. SHIT was the only word i uttered. i turned around. behind me: xianhui. her eyes were huge. i kept walking. nevermind again. just give a vacant expression. act cool. act professional. tjco is here to scare everyone. seated. xuefang in front of me. ok, everything in order. announcement. blah blah...i knew he couldn't read TA KE LA MA GAN properly.

"gold...*clap clap*...silver...gold...$*&^%(*&^$W(*...gold with hon- *$#&%$()&W$...blah blah" like i care.
"laoshi, wo men na gold with honours."
"eh, ask everyone to gather at level one. huang sheng wants to talk to us."
"say T! SAY T! say TJ!! SAY TJ!!" etc etc etc...i was the one who started the cheers...hehehe...

wth!! i was angry. why are they looking at us?! wat's wrong. acjc, vjc...hmm...the judges yes, of course...lucky can get to watch many schools later...so many things to think abt. yawn...so tired...hair messy, shoes must be damn bright. my first and only gold with honours. concert coming. i want a good end. oh yeah, huang sheng spent $500 on us. Xin Wang!! maybe it's just me. why am i so concerned. wait, am i concerned? dunno...it's my school, my pdp, my life. aiya. crap the passion. i have a life other than co.

It doesn't matter if at this point, we're ahead of others, or lagging behind, because anything can change in the final lap. I believe we have the potential to emerge, to emerge as the top orchestra, to emerge as the orchestra with the highest spirit. So let us do it again, let the dream come through. We probably won't even remember why we put in so much effort pushing ourselves for hours and hours every day in a room practising our hearts out. But one thing's for certain, when you get a GWH, it doesn't really matter why you did it. It doesn't really matter how much sweat, blood and tears we shed for it because a GWH is a GWH. OUR. GWH.

Letter from Miss Ng, tjco overall teacher-in-charge:

Hi everyone,

I guess at this point in time, everyone must be feeling very stressed about SYF and the upcoming concert. This may be the first time you are experiencing all these. I would like to assure you that everybody is in this together. Many problems can be solved if we walk through this path and go through thick and think together, for example help one another during our practices.

When I was a student, I took up chinese orchestra and went through all these just like you. I remembered that apart from practices after school, I need to go back on saturdays (9 - 6pm) and even on Sunday mornings for practices in Dunman High School. Just like you, I feel very much overwhelmed and sometimes even have complains.

But gradually, with a close group of friends, I learn how to cope and manage my practices and studies at the same time. Looking back, I don't regret it at all as what I get from it all is the priceless friendship and close bond. We even keep contact till now.

Take this as an opportunity to treat it as a challenge and mould your character. In life, not everything will be smooth. There will inevitably be some rough patches. When you go out to work, I'm sure there will be some periods whereby you will be very busy, (especially meeting deadlinessss). You need to find some ways to cope with your stress.

I know all of you are willing to work hard and I'm also working hard with all of you. These 3 weeks are very critical to everyone of us. So let us persevere and treasure these moments together =)

These few weeks, what I felt was touched after touched. I felt really touched to see everyone so closed to each other. Im so touched to see everyone having much laugher during dinner time, and working so hard together during practice. Im so touched to see that, when it's time for serious work, all the bad attitudes and habits are all gone, what came along was cooperation, hard work and effort.

Now, after a long struggle from the dark hole, we're finally back on track on the golden walkway linking to gold with honours. We can do it, I believe you know it too.

We're only one month away from SYF, and we are really sooo close to getting the gold with honours already. Let's chiong for the last month, and do the college proud, the teachers proud, huang sheng proud, and most importantly, DO YOURSELF PROUD.

This one-month long campaign will encourage and motivate everyone to work extra hard for our SYF and concert. I know it's not easy, but we've come so far, you want to get the well-deserved return don't you? It's our showtime soon, show them what we got, show them how chinese orchestra can play 江南丝竹 well and meanwhile can do excellent jazz music!

So show them what we got TJCO. I have total faith in us =)

HEY TJCO! Rachel Yang is here to leave a post man! I hardly post, so you guys can go buy toto later.I just wanna say, JIAYOU FOR SYF! Show the people out there what TJCO is made of!

When i joined TJCO in dec2006 (im a dsa student), the average turnout for practices was 13. There were many instruments missing but we carried on pracs as usual. I rmb how xulaoshi(our ex ex teacher ic) went to the portal to look for students who used to be in CO, and called them up one by one, pestered them for MONTHS (i really mean months) and got them to help out for our SYF. We had really really very few people then. We had prac 4 times a week, each until 8-9pm. And by the time i got home, it was 10+. I only had the energy to bathe and then go to slp. No time for hw(but my tutors were really understanding =]) Our choice piece was a really difficult song, with the weird weird 5/8 and the VERY BEAUTIFUL HUQIN MELODY (=DDD). TJCO07 did the miracle by getting the GWH with just 59 people onstage, of which prolly abt 10+ were guest players. We only had 4 zhongruans, 1 gaoyinsheng (harry: why yiheng so loud!) and 3 out of 5 cellos were guests. When the results were announced, we all jumped up from our seats, screaming, yelling and crying. Getting GWH is a once in a lifetime kinda thing, and you will NEVER forget it. i'll nvr forget the hundreds of litres of tears ive shed during pracs, the hundreds of mucus-filled tissues(i was sick) i threw away the night before syf, the smiles and wide grins on everyone's faces after the results were announced (xulaoshi cried like a crybaby="]) and we were soooo HIGH that we threw junhong(our chairperson) up in the air.

To those who were with us 2 yrs ago, rmb the tears and hardship behind our GWH. You guys know that it's like that when it comes to SYF. Dont be disheartened by huang sheng's scoldings and your sudden slip of grades LOL.

Remember: dont play and hope for the miracle, play and MAKE the miracle.

Alas, it have been busy and rush schedule for this few weeks, and it can only get more busy..-_-

I was not able to make it to the meeting yesterday but i would just like to say some things.I have always had faith in Tjco. We can make it, and we will. Maybe not easy, but in the end we will survive it all. Our goal is clear, and i can see us working hard. Keep Spirits up and when the day come when we reap what we sow, we will feel the joy more than anyone can, because we were involved. We were the ones who went through the long and hard process, the one who went down the road less travelled, and the ones who completed the race.
